Tampa man found in the water, clinging to pylon after theft in Florida Keys: deputies

ISLAMORADA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa man found himself in a precarious situation after stealing a pair of boots and fleeing deputies, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Da’Veon Hassan Fleming, 29, was accused of stealing a pair of boots from a store in Islamorada at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Deputies found him after discovering his vehicle near the Snake Creek Bridge, but he ran off into the mangroves. He was then spotted crawling through murky water near Snake Creek.

Deputies were unable to take him into custody by foot or using a boat.

Fleming was spotted again at around 6 p.m. and fled into the mangroves. MCSO said he swam to a pylon and was found clinging to it.

Fleming was arrested with the help of a citizen boater. He was charged with larceny and resisting arrest.
