8 Banks with Custom Debit Cards (With Examples)

Whether you want a family photo, pictures of your furry friends, a beautiful landscape or an eye-catching color, plenty of banks offer custom debit cards to showcase your personality and style. Compare custom debit card options from Chase, Wells Fargo, PNC Bank and more.

8 banks that offer custom debit cards

Chase

Chase features custom debit cards and credit card designs with select accounts for no extra fees. With a Chase checking account, you can request a Disney Visa Debit Card. Choose between various cobranded Disney card designs and the ability to adjust the card’s font, with designs like Darth Vader, Tiana, Toy Story, Sleeping Beauty Castle and Vintage Mickey. If you’re an existing Chase user, you can simply head to Chase’s site, log in with your details and then select the Disney Visa tab to start customizing your Disney card. Chase’s debit cards are typically received within six to 10 business days after ordering.

Greenlight

Greenlight is a kids’ and family banking app that offers custom prepaid debit cards you can request for an optional cost. You can upload a photo and adjust how you want it to appear on the card. A custom debit card costs $10, and the image must be at least 840×840 pixels but not exceed 10MB. Additionally, as this is a family app, there are certain themes and images you can’t submit, including no copyrighted material or other pictures not owned by you, culturally insensitive images, obscene material or images of celebrities or cartoon characters. Greenlight’s debit cards are typically received within seven to 10 business days after ordering.

Cash App

The popular peer-to-peer money app Cash App offers a customizable Cash App Card that is linked to your Cash App balance. Compare a collection of “stamps” to add to your card, draw your own custom design and choose a variety of background colors. The black and white cards are free to order, while custom designs with stamps or unique colors may charge a fee, depending on the complexity. You can also upgrade your Cash App card from plastic to metal for a $50 fee. New Cash App cards typically arrive around 10 business days after ordering.

Bank of America (BofA)

While Bank of America doesn’t offer the ability to submit your own custom designs for a debit card, it has a variety of designs to choose from with no extra fees. You can choose charitable designs that support organizations you care about (at no extra cost), show your school spirit with dozens of university logos that generate contributions to your alma mater, browse military and armed forces designs, compare multiple options for professional sports teams or classic scenic landscapes.

Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo offers its Card Design Studio Service, which lets you submit a custom photo or choose one of its existing designs from its library. There is no fee for using the Card Design Studio. Wells Fargo suggests you can submit photos of your family, your pets or even your child’s artwork. However, like most banks, you can’t submit copyrighted material or the image or likeness of a public figure. Wells Fargo states new cards typically arrive within five to seven business days after design approval.

PNC Bank

PNC doesn’t offer the ability to submit your own pictures for a debit card, but it does provide a wide variety of unique card designs you can request at no extra fee. A few options include professional sport teams, university designs, a military option, a pride card and various designer options with mountains or space themes. There is one custom PNC card that has a cost, and it’s the Heart Design Visa® Debit Card that charges a $5 annual fee, which is donated to the American Red Cross. In total, over 50 card designs let you show your team spirit or personality. If you’re already a PNC customer, you can change your debit card design in your PNC app by selecting Cards, then Card Actions and then selecting your design. Or, you can log in to your PNC account through PNC Online Banking to change your debit card’s look. After submission, your new card will arrive within five to seven business days.

Truist

Online bank Truist offers fully customizable debit cards or the ability to choose from a library of designs. There are no fees to customize your Truist debit cards, and the bank allows personal and business customers to customize cards as well. You can pick the card’s orientation, browse through hundreds of preset images or upload your own photos. If you choose a Truist gallery image for your custom debit card, the card will be delivered in five to seven business days. If you upload a personal image, there is a two- to three-day approval process, and if approved, it will be delivered within five to seven business days. While you can design your Truist debit cards, the Delta SkyMiles® Debit Cards can’t be customized.

Huntington

Huntington operates in 11 states in the Midwest and offers a nice spread of customizable debit card options for its checking accounts. You can choose from school spirit options, such as the University of Michigan logo (Go Blue!), professional sports teams, landscapes or animals. And for the special few, you can go with a Huntington Honors card for select members, including nurses, service members and first responders. However, to get a personalized debit card, you must either call 800-480-2265 or visit a local branch.

How to customize your debit card

Banks that offer custom debit cards let you choose a design when you order your physical debit card for the first time, or you can replace your standard card if you already have a bank account with that bank.

To order a custom debit card, you can usually call the bank or order the card through your online portal or mobile banking app. Head to your debit card management settings or the bank’s replacement card ordering service, which will usually lead you to the place to request a new card.

Keep in mind: When you request a custom debit card, the details on the new debit card, including the expiration date, will change. Be prepared to update your bill payments and virtual wallets.

Typically, no. Most banks don’t charge extra to choose a unique design or select a custom background, usually offering it as an optional and complimentary service. If you want to upload your own design or personal photos instead of choosing from the bank’s library, some places may charge a small extra fee, usually around $10.

If you want even more flair on your custom debit card, such as a metal debit card with your name laser-engraved on it or trippy shifting colors, expect to pay a little more. Special cards like this are sometimes complimentary for premium bank accounts or high-roller credit cards. However, some banks charge anywhere from $10 to $50 to upgrade from a basic to a fancy card.

Can I put whatever I want on a custom debit card?

Don’t plan on being able to submit copyrighted material or anything remotely “adult” if you’re ordering a custom debit card from a bank directly.

In most cases, banks don’t allow these images on personalized debit cards:

  • Copyrighted images, such as cartoon characters or logos not offered by the bank itself
  • Celebrities or public figures
  • Depictions of death, violence or nudity
  • Images of illegal goods, drugs or guns

Can I order custom cards outside of my bank?

Yes, but proceed with caution. Some third-party custom card companies require you to mail your card to them to customize your existing card or ask for your card’s details to print a new one.

If you order a custom debit card from a third-party company, be sure to lock or disable your debit card if you’re required to mail the card in. Additionally, the process may take a few weeks, depending on the complexity of your new card.

If you’re wary about sending anyone your card’s details or mailing your card (which I am also wary of), then you can also go the route of ordering a peel-and-stick cover to do it yourself. These options tend to be more affordable, often around $10 per custom skin. However, custom debit card companies may have similar rules to banks and restrict the submission of copyrighted materials.

Bottom line

Luckily for us, banks and credit unions often have custom debit cards available at no extra charge. Chase, Wells Fargo, PNC and more include unique and fun designs you can select to add a little personalization to your wallet.

But don’t just pick a bank because it has fancy cards. Consider the fees, availability and features of the checking account, too. For more options, compare the best checking accounts.
