Earlier this week, a tragic accident in Central African Republic’s capital city left several families mourning the loss of their children.
While roughly 5,000 students were taking exams at Barthelemy Boganda High School, a transformer near the premises malfunctioned and exploded. The sound of the explosion sparked a stampede inside the school.
“The building shook and we were all terrified. It was everyone man for himself,” a student told the Associated Press.
According to the country’s Ministry of National Education, at least 29 students were killed during this stampede. Another 260 students suffered injuries.
“I offer our sincere condolences to the parents of the affected candidates and wish a speedy recovery to the injured candidates,” Education Minister Aurelien-Simplice Kongbelet-Zimgas said.

Countless people have offered their prayers to the families impacted by this tragedy.
“That’s a tragedy, love. Exams are bad enough without chaos like that—hope those poor kids get proper help,” one person said.
“Man this is so sad to hear,” another person commented. “Praying for the families.”
“Thoughts and prayers. I feel for the families,” a third person wrote.
The president of the school’s parents’ association has called for an investigation, claiming a lack of maintenance led to the explosion. Well, their wish was granted by the Education Ministry.
It’s unclear when the cause of the explosion will be revealed.
Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has already determined that every student injured in the stampede will receive free medical care.
