Fires involving active mobility devices (AMDs) rose by almost 22% in 2024, up from 55 fires in 2023 to 67 fires last year.

The figure was part of the annual statistics report released by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on Thursday (13 February).

SCDF said AMD fires “remain an area of concern” especially in residential areas. They reminded the public “not to leave batteries or devices to charge unattended for an extended period” and “to refrain from purchasing or using non-original batteries.”

Overall, there were 968 fires in residential premises in 2024, a decrease of 0.2% from 2023. Fires due to unattended cooking and electrical origin were the top two causes of fires in residential premises in 2024.

SCDF responded to 245,279 EMS calls in 2024, a decrease of 0.6% or 1,553 calls from 2023. “While demand for SCDF’s EMS has alleviated slightly, we are observing a general upwards trend over the past five years,” said SCDF. The “increase in demand” is expected to continue beyond 2025 because of the ageing population in Singapore.
