“It’s horrible to see that all those people were bombed, and to hear all these stories. We have to do something about it. If we remain silent, it might happen again.”

“It feels more and more like history is repeating itself. Terrible things are happening in Europe and it looks like it could escalate. It could get very worrying if the U.S. doesn’t step in. Even in Japan, in Asia, it’s going the same way. It’s very scary. I’ve got grandchildren and I want peace so they can live their lives happily.”

The uranium bomb instantly killed about 78,000 people and by the end of 1945, the number of dead, including from radiation exposure, reached about 140,000. The U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki on August 9.
