FedEx plane makes emergency landing after bird strike

(NewsNation) — A FedEx cargo plane caught fire and had to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport.

It temporarily halted traffic for around an hour after the landing occurred at 8 a.m. ET.

Social media footage showed a fire on the underside of the plane as it came to land at the airport. No one was injured.

Recent aviation disasters and close calls stoke fears about the safety of flying

“FedEx Flight 3609 from Newark to Indianapolis experienced a bird strike during takeoff,” a FedEx spokesperson said in a statement to NewsNation.

“Our B767 crew declared an emergency and returned safely to Newark after dealing with the resulting engine damage, including an engine fire.

“The training, expertise, and professionalism demonstrated by our FedEx pilots was exemplary. We are thankful for the quick actions of our crew and first responders.”

It follows several aviation incidents in recent weeks, most recently including a United Airlines flight making an emergency landing at Newark and smoke being reported on a Delta flight from Atlanta.
