After failed traffic stop, Virginia trooper shoots at man who crashed, fled on foot and remains at large

ISLE OF WIGHT — A state trooper on Monday night shot at a man who authorities said crashed a sedan, flashed a firearm and fled the scene after the trooper attempted a traffic stop near the James River Bridge.

The man remains at large but “poses no threat to the community,” Virginia State Police said.

Around 9:41 p.m. on Monday, a trooper observed a Chevrolet Impala speeding south on the U.S. 17. State police said the trooper attempted to pull over the car.

State police said the Impala stopped in the roadway’s median near the Eagle Harbor Apartments in Carrollton. The driver, while fleeing the car on foot, displayed a firearm and the trooper fired at him. There were two passengers in the car.

Multiple agencies unsuccessfully attempted to located the man. State police said the passengers and trooper were not injured.

No additional details were immediately available.

Anyone with information is urged to contact state police at (804) 750-8789 or submit a tip through questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
