Authorities investigate shootings in Minnesota; legislators targeted, governor says
Authorities are investigating reports of “targeted shootings” in suburban Minneapolis in what Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said was an “ongoing situation.”
The shootings were in Brooklyn Park and Champlin, two neighboring cities about 10 and 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis, Walz said Saturday morning. The governor’s office said it will provide an update on “violence targeted at legislators” on Saturday morning.
“The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon,” Walz said.
Brooklyn Park Police issued a shelter-in-place alert for a 3-mile radius of the Edinburgh Golf Course, the city of Brooklyn Park said in a post to Facebook. According to local news outlets KARE 11 and Fox 9, the alert warned the public that a suspect could be posing as law enforcement.
Walz said he activated the State Emergency Operations Center in response to the shootings, giving local law enforcement in Brooklyn Park and Champlin “the full resources of the State of Minnesota.”
More information about the locations of the shootings or any injuries or deaths was not immediately available.
