British teacher jumps out of car boot to escape kidnapper in Caribbean
A British teacher held prisoner in the Caribbean escaped his captor by jumping out of the boot of a car.
Zaheer Esat, who runs a private school in Ashby, Leics, was kidnapped at gunpoint last Friday while visiting Trinidad to see his parents.
The kidnapper used a car to block the road as Mr Esat, 46, and his 70-year-old father and brother-in-law were driving back from visiting a mosque near the west coast of the island.
The male suspect, armed with a rifle, then shouted at the family to lower their heads and dragged Mr Esat from the rear passenger seat of the black Nissan hatchback into his own car. His family were left unharmed.
Mr Esat, who is of dual Trinidadian and British nationality, had not been carrying a mobile phone at the time of his abduction, police said
His father, a retired imam who did not wish to be identified, issued urgent pleas for the kidnapper to release him, saying his son suffers from asthma and needs an inhaler.
Two days later, Mr Esat was discovered by a passer-by wandering a cremation site about six miles away from the scene of the kidnapping.

Mr Esat was taken to the police and told investigating officers that he had escaped by jumping out of the boot of a car after being moved by his kidnappers.
He was taken for medical treatment and has since been released to the care of his family, according to Trinidadian media reports.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Richard Smith, the assistant commissioner of police, announced that a 28-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.
A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: “We provided support to a British man who was reported missing in Trinidad and were in contact with the local authorities.”
Mr Esat’s online CV states that he is a director at the Lewis Charlton Group of Learning Centres, a private school for pupils with emotional and special educational needs.
