Elon Musk’s alternative to GPT-4o

Elon Musk accelerates on the front of artificial intelligence with the release of the official API for Grok 3, the advanced model developed by xAI. Now accessible to developers and companies, Grok 3 aims to directly challenge the big players in the sector like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Grok 3: the AI flagship model of xAI now available with API

Grok 3 is the most recent and powerful model of xAI, designed to understand text and images and respond with advanced reasoning capabilities. It is the engine behind the AI features of the X platform (formerly Twitter), where it is already active to generate content, respond to posts, and offer insights to users.

Launched as a less “filtered” response compared to other generative models, Grok has always sought to stand out for a more direct, ironic tone and less aligned with the “politically correct” filters of its rivals.

The two versions available via API

xAI offers two versions of the model via API:

  • Grok 3: the complete model, with advanced reasoning capabilities
  • Grok 3 Mini: a lighter version, designed for applications that are less demanding in terms of computational power

The APIs are already active and accessible through this link.

The official prices of the API Grok 3

The costs are divided between input tokens (those you send to the model) and output tokens (those the model generates in response):

Model Input Token Price (per million) Output Token Price (per million)
Grok 3 $3 $15
Grok 3 Mini $0.30 $0.50

1 million tokens is equivalent to approximately 750,000 words.

These prices position Grok 3 in the “premium” range of the AI market, on par with Anthropic’s Sonnet model (Claude 3.7), but higher than Google’s new Gemini 2.5 Pro.

Context window: less extensive than expected

At the time of launch, xAI had announced that Grok 3 would be able to handle up to 1 million tokens per session. However, the current maximum API limit is 131,072 tokens, which is approximately 97,500 words.

This discrepancy has generated some criticism among developers on X, who were expecting a wider context window.

A more “direct” AI, but still evolving

Grok has become known for its willingness to use more explicit and humorous language compared to competitors like ChatGPT or Gemini. In line with Musk’s statements, Grok has been described as an “anti-woke” AI, meaning less influenced by ideological filters.

However, various analyses have shown that previous versions of the model still displayed a certain progressive inclination on social issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, diversity, and inequalities. Musk attributed this behavior to training on public web data and promised greater neutrality in future updates.

Not only API: Grok 3 is also integrated on X

The model is not only available via API, but it is also natively integrated on X, Musk’s social platform. Here Grok 3 powers:

  • Automatic responses in the comments
  • Analysis and synthesis of thread
  • Content generation for creator

This integration makes X one of the first social platforms to have an internal artificial intelligence model, optimized for conversation and real-time content generation.

Fierce competition and transparency to improve

Despite the hype, xAI still has to prove that Grok 3 can hold its own against GPT-4o, Claude 3, and Gemini 2.5 in terms of independent benchmarks, stability, and transparency.

Some industry experts have criticized the lack of open technical data on Grok 3, emphasizing that the metrics shared by xAI could be partial or selected.

Conclusions: Grok 3 enters the “AI API War” of Musk

With the release of the API, xAI officially enters the competition of AI APIs, offering an alternative tool to the models of OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Grok 3 aims to stand out not only for its less filtered approach but also for its deep integration with the Musk ecosystem (X, Tesla, Neuralink?).

The strategy seems clear: to build an AI with a “strong personality,” more human and integrated with social media, but also ready to attract developers looking for alternatives different from ChatGPT.
