Ex-Olathe teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student sentenced to prison

A former Olathe North High School teacher accused of coercing a student into sexual contact at his home was sentenced to more than five years in prison Friday.

Micah Horton pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual relations in Johnson County District Court in January. He was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison Friday.

Thomas and Tricia Bath, defense attorneys for Horton, did not respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon.

Horton, who taught choir at Olathe North High School, was fired in February 2024.

The Star reported previously that while he was working as the school’s vocal music director, Horton allegedly exchanged sexual messages with three female students via Snapchat.

One of the girls reported Horton had sent her explicit photos and that he had steered conversations between them toward sex.

He allegedly coerced her into sending him explicit photos, “making out” on school grounds and encouraging her to come to his Shawnee home, where on two occasions they “engaged in oral sex with one another,” according to court documents.

Previous reporting from Star reporters Sarah Ritter and Bill Lukitsch was used in this story.
