Grand Seiko Returns To Nature With A Stunning Heritage Release

  • The 62GS was defined by its bezel-free construction.
  • Grand Seiko pays homage to this timepiece with an exquisite new iteration.
  • Available in Australia from April 2025.

Grand Seiko, Australia’s favourite Japanese watch brand, has once again looked into its illustrious past to deliver another spectacular contemporary release, drawing inspiration from a legendary collection from the 1960s.

First introduced in 1967, the 62GS was Grand Seiko’s first automatic mechanical watch. This iconic piece of Grand Seiko’s history was defined by its bezel-free construction; a unique aesthetic that allowed for a seamless integration of the crystal with the case. This classic feature made this release an instant hit with collectors and Grand Seiko purists, adding a glossy, smooth design to the growing sports watch market.

Grand Seiko Heritage Collection

Now, Grand Seiko pays homage to this timepiece with an exquisite new iteration, complete with a dial that captures the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms in early spring. It’s a poetic tribute to sakura-kakushi, a rare phenomenon that occurs in the northern part of Japan, where cherry blossoms are gently veiled beneath a blanket of snow in early spring.

For Grand Seiko’s master artisans working at the brand’s Studio Shizukuishi, inspiration is never far away. The spectacular views just outside their window reflect the transient seasons that shape the region, influencing their craft and capturing Japan’s enviable beauty with every detail.

Adding to the collection, a second version arrives with a silver-hued dial and takes its inspiration from sakura-tsukiyo – the tranquil beauty of cherry blossoms softly illuminated under a hazy, moonlit sky.

Grand Seiko Returns with Expert Craftsmanship

I’m reminded of Grand Seiko’s SBGE307 released earlier this year at Watches & Wonders; there’s a delicate interplay of light and shadow that captures a calm nighttime scene on the dial. The finely textured dials, whether in soft pink or luminous silver, shift subtly in different lighting conditions for a unique glare and radiance.

Under the hood, Grand Seiko’s new 62GS is powered by the Japanese luxury watchmaker’s smallest automatic mechanical movement, the Caliber 9S27. With a case diameter of 30mm and a svelte thickness of just 10.5mm, this is the slimmest automatic Grand Seiko timepiece to date, ensuring a comfortable and refined presence on the wrist.

This stunning new timepiece will be available at Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in April 2025.
