A woman says her boyfriend lied to her about his reason for switching gyms — and she’s now wondering if she has the “right to be upset” after learning the “embarrassing” truth.
The woman detailed her story on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet, a place where women can go to seek advice from other women. In her post, she explained that her boyfriend “is really into the gym” and “goes most days.”
About a month ago, she said, he told her that “he was changing gyms as he needed a bit of a change of scenery and because his had got really busy.”

The woman noted that she “felt it was off” because she knew her boyfriend “really liked” his old gym, but then “thought nothing more of it.”
However, the original poster (OP) recently bumped into a former colleague who goes to her boyfriend’s old gym, and the former colleague mentioned that she thought the gym had been “harsh” on the OP’s boyfriend.

“I asked what she meant, and she was apologetic and said she thought I knew, and that her understanding was my BF had his membership canceled due to a complaint by another member, and that I’d need to ask him about it,” the OP continued.
The woman called her boyfriend shortly after the conversation, and “he admitted this was true.”
“He says he made what he thought was an innocent comment which was laughed off by a woman at the time” — but she apparently complained to gym staff afterwards. Her boyfriend then received an email informing him his membership had been canceled.
The OP then revealed the comment he made.

“He said [the] woman was doing squats and he joked to her after, ‘I thought your leggings were going to split,’ “ she explained.
The OP said he told her that he didn’t tell her about the situation because he thought she’d be “annoyed” at him, and he also reiterated that he had just been trying to make a joke.
The woman concluded her post by admitting that she’s unsure whether she’s “right to be upset about the comment” or if she’s actually more bothered by the fact that her boyfriend hid the whole thing from her.
“It’s just a bit embarrassing all round,” she added.
The vast majority of commenters said they thought the woman had every right to be upset — and many were decidedly unimpressed with her boyfriend’s actions.
“Grim! [I] wouldn’t want to continue dating a man who would say that to a woman he doesn’t know at the gym,” one person said.

“Not a gym-goer, but to my understanding men like your partner [are] exactly the reason quite a lot of women don’t like going to the gym and/or have found a women’s-only gym. Sorry, sucks to be with a man who is the problem,” someone else wrote.
“What are you going to do? I hope not make excuses,” the same person added.

Others said they weren’t entirely convinced the OP’s boyfriend had been completely honest about what he did to get himself banned.
One person said: “It was inappropriate. The fact that he lied to you at the time would also make me think he may have said something even worse and could still be lying to you.”
“It was an inappropriate comment, but I am surprised the gym canceled his membership over this — do you think this was the first complaint?” added someone else.
