NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Monsoon moisture will increase across New Mexico early this week. Heavy rain will bring a flash flooding threat on and off burn scars, especially on Tuesday.
Scattered storms have developed Sunday across eastern New Mexico, bringing severe weather and heavy, flooding rainfall to a few areas. It’s another hot day too, where it’s been drier. Unfortunately, there is still a large fire danger across the state due to the warm temperatures, breezy winds, and low humidity. Monsoon moisture will increase Monday across the state, bringing more storms to areas along and east of the Rio Grande Valley. Again, these storms will be capable of heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

The heaviest rain will likely fall on Tuesday as near-record levels of monsoon moisture stream into the state. Areas from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains south to southern New Mexico have the best chance at seeing flooding rainfall, both on and off burn scar areas. There is a significant threat of flash flooding around the burn scars in Ruidoso Tuesday. If you live in or around flood-prone areas and burn scars, take precautions now and know where to go in case of flash flooding. Also, make sure you have a way to receive weather warnings and information.
Rain and thunderstorm chances will continue for the rest of the week, with chances becoming more isolated by Friday. Regardless, any storm could drop heavy rainfall, causing flash flooding, especially on top of what could already be saturated ground.
