Key Takeaways

On April 24, 2025, the company announced that 597,630 full-size trucks and SUVs in the United States are being recalled.

The recall is due to a manufacturing defect that can result in the vehicles’ V8 engines failing without any warning to the driver.

This defect affects approximately three percent of the GM vehicles in this category.

As the weather warms, we start dreaming of summer road trips through the South. But the key to any road trip is the vehicle—not the brisket sliders at Buccee’s, though they come in a close second. Safety first, our mothers always told us. That’s why, if you drive a Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC, you’ll want to pay attention to the latest news from GM.

CBS News reported a major recall coming from car manufacturing giant General Motors (GM), which produces brands including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. On April 24, 2025, the company announced that 597,630 full-size trucks and SUVs in the United States are being recalled due to a manufacturing defect that can result in the vehicles’ V8 engines failing without any warning to the driver. This defect affects approximately three percent of the GM vehicles in this category.

According to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the defect is related to the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components and can lead to engine damage and engine failure. This loss of propulsion increases the risk of car accidents and crashes, which can result in injury and/or property damage.

In January, auto safety regulators opened an investigation after receiving “39 complaints and a number of Early Warning Reporting (EWR) Field Reports” alleging engine failure without detectability in GM vehicles with the L87 V8 engine. The company estimated that 877,710 vehicles were affected, including the popular Chevrolet Silverado truck.

GM’s analysis identified a building period from March 2021 through May 2024 that had an increased rate of potentially related engine failure claims, which then led to identifying supplier manufacturing and quality issues during that time. This included “rod-bearing damage from sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft-oil galleries and out of specification crankshaft dimensions and surface finish.”

The recall (recall number N252494000) specifically includes these GM vehicles with a 6.2L V8 gas engine:

  • 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

So what happens if you have one of the cars listed in the recall? Bring it to your local dealer to have the engine inspected, repaired, or replaced, if needed, free of charge. Owners will be notified by mail on June 9, 2025, but you can also check your VIN number in the GM Owner Center or on NHTSA’s website. To date, there have been 12 potentially related crashes and alleged injuries—all “minor or non-physical.”

Y’all stay safe out there!
