Even before the major layoffs from this week, layoffs had already been on the rise, according to data shared with CBS News. From January to September, about 950,000 were eliminated, the largest number since 2020, when the pandemic led to 2 million job cuts through September of that year.

As job insecurity looms for many and SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are set to run out on Saturday, Nov. 1, affecting roughly 42 million Americans amid the ongoing government shutdown, some people are calling the overlap “an absolutely disastrous pairing.”
