Third metro Detroit Sheetz gas station and convenience store cuts ribbon

The 24-hour gas station and convenience store chain with all kinds of food and drink options has officially arrived in Macomb County.

Sheetz, a family-owned brand based out of Pennsylvania, opened its third metro Detroit and Michigan location at 29050 23 Mile Road in New Baltimore on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The new store, with 12 gas fueling stations and 24-hour burgers, pizza, milkshakes, coffee and more, is part of the company’s plan to open 50-60 stores across southeast Michigan over the next five to six years.

President and CEO Travis Sheetz said the Macomb County opening is a milestone for the company.

“We’re committed to southeast Michigan and the entire state for the long haul — building more locations, partnering with local organizations, and earning our place as the store communities can count on,” Travis Sheetz said in a news release.

At the Sept. 23 opening in New Baltimore, people excited about the new store gathered as Sheetz gave away two $250 and one $2,500 gift cards, according to a news release from Sheetz. Sheetz offered attendees free fountain drinks and coffee for the day, as well as discounts on fuel, according to the news release.

Sheetz donated $2,500 to the Special Olympics Michigan and $2,500 to Forgotten Harvest at the opening, according to the news release.

The 29050 23 Mile Road location was previously a Marathon gas station and Quality Lube Express, according to the Macomb Daily.

Sheetz first arrived in Michigan in August 2024 in Romulus. The opening of the location near the Detroit Metro Airport drew a large and excited crowd. A second store opened in Romulus in July 2025.

While many are excited about Sheetz, its expansion into Michigan has been contested by many metro Detroit residents and business owners.

Three residents spoke in opposition to zoning variances at a Chesterfield Township Zoning Board of Appeals in December 2023, the day Sheetz was discussed, according to meeting minutes.

In Macomb Township, residents passionately opposed a new Sheetz 3 miles down the road from the New Baltimore location at a June 3 Planning Commission meeting, with some gas station owners and residents saying Sheetz could take away from local businesses that have been there for years and impact light and traffic in surrounding neighborhoods.

Opposition to Sheetz earlier this year in Farmington Hills included concerns about crime.
