School shooting threat made on social media by student at elementary school in Petersburg
Petersburg Bureau of Police, late in the evening on Sept. 22, informed school administration at Pleasants Lane Elementary that one of their students had made a school shooting threat against their school on social media, according to Principal Joseph Rodriguez’s message posted at pleasants.petersburg.k12.va.us on Sept. 23.
“The Petersburg Bureau of Police immediately investigated the credibility of the threat and did not find the student in possession of a weapon. Due to the nature of this threat, the school division will take appropriate disciplinary action. This student will not be allowed on campus,” Rodriguez’s message stated.
As a precaution, according to information provided by Rodriguez, additional Petersburg Bureau of Police officers were present on the Pleasants Lane Elementary campus the day after the threat. Mental health support was also available to students.
The Progress-Index reached out to Petersburg Bureau of Police on Sept. 23 to learn more about the incident, but as of 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 24, no response has been received.
“All threats made against our school and division are taken very seriously and appropriate legal and disciplinary action will be taken,” Rodriguez’s message stated. “We continue to work closely with the Petersburg Bureau of Police.”
In an effort to help keep schools safe, Rodriquez requested parents and caregivers to encourage children to report all safety concerns to a trusted adult, school officials or law enforcement.
