South Dakota State football running back Nate White dies at 20-years-old

South Dakota State football running back Nate White has died, the program announced June 25.
The 20-year-old running back was a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He transferred to South Dakota State in January after two seasons at Wisconsin. The school did not release any details about White’s death.

The Brookings Police Department announced his death is being investigated as of the evening of June 25.
At 6:44 a.m. that morning, White’s roommate called police to report that he was not breathing and was unresponsive in his bed, the department stated in a press release.
“Efforts by Brookings Ambulance and police units to resuscitate White were unsuccessful,” the release states.
The Brookings County coroner pronounced White’s death and ordered an autopsy.
“Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White,” SDSU head coach Dan Jackson said in a release. “Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination and overall positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout the upcoming season.”
White was one of the top prep recruits in the state of Wisconsin in 2022 after rushing for 1,345 yards and 26 touchdowns. As a junior at Rufus King High School, he claimed conference offensive player of the year honors as a quarterback after posting 1,163 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns.

“The South Dakota State University community is deeply saddened by the news of Nate White’s passing,” SDSU President Barry Dunn said. “While Nate had not been on campus long, he was not only beloved by his teammates and coaches, but also by faculty and those who had the opportunity to get to know him. This is certainly a sad time for our campus, community and the thousands of Jackrabbits supporters across the state and nation. Our hearts and prayers are with Nate’s family, loved ones, teammates and anyone who knew him.”
