Google is now facing a legal complaint that holds it indirectly responsible for the suicide of Sewell Setzer, a boy who shortly before the tragic act had conversed with a bot based on artificial intelligence.

Sewell’s mother, Garcia, decided to take the matter to court, arguing that her son’s obsessive relationship with the chatbot had significantly impacted his mental state and his choices.

The lawyer of Garcia emphasized that the chatbot, developed by Character.AI, was designed to present itself in specific and deceptive ways: as a real person, as a licensed psychotherapist, and even as an adult lover.

This programming has contributed, according to the accusation, to making Sewell want to live exclusively in the world created by artificial intelligence, incapable of facing the external reality.

Google has taken a stance through its spokesperson, José Castaneda, expressing its disagreement with the decision of District Judge Anne Conway, who rejected the defense based on the freedom of speech guaranteed by the United States Constitution

According to Google, in fact, the interaction between the adolescent and the chatbot would not fall under any circumstances within the constitutional protections invoked.

Furthermore, Google wanted to clarify that Character.AI is a completely independent entity from the company. Castaneda explained that Google did not create, design, or manage the Character.AI app or any of its components. 

This means that the company rejects any type of responsibility for the decisions and operations of the chatbot, marking a clear line between the two entities.
