Pinetop-Lakeside residents asked to evacuate due to large residential fire

A large residential fire in Lakeside prompted evacuations of community residents near the area of the blaze.

The Navajo County Emergency Management and Preparedness office issued an evacuation notice on social media shortly before 8 a.m. on July 10 for residents near 3093 Sunset Lane, Lakeside, as fire crews continued working to control the fire. Evacuated residents can go to the Blue Ridge High School Gymnasium for assistance.

As of 9:30 a.m., the main threat of the fire spread was under control, but a significant amount of heat remained in the area, according to the Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District. In response, the U.S. Forest Service will launch a helicopter for water drops in the area of the main fire, and evacuation orders remain in effect until air operations are complete.

Sunset Lane and SR-260 are temporarily closed to traffic as crews respond to the fire. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

The cause of the fire was not released.
