Vitalik Buterin Calls for Strong Social Values at App Layer
- Buterin contended that Ethereum’s layer 1 is more susceptible to philosophical influence.
- The co-founder argued that general-purpose languages like C++, which don’t have much room to be shaped by social philosophy.
The application layer, not the infrastructure layer, is where “good social philosophy” is most needed by Ethereum. This was recently called by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. Decentralized apps built on top of Ethereum’s base infrastructure are built and choices concerning their operation are made at the app layer.
A user argued that Ethereum requires a new generation of developers. Who are steeped in Ethereum’s basic principles in order to renew itself. And Buterin replied to this idea in a post on Warpcast on April 12. That this is more important for the app layer was his main point.
Buterin stated:
“Apps are 80% special purpose. What apps you build depends heavily on what ideas you have of what Ethereum apps, and Ethereum as a whole, are there to do for the world. And so having good ideas on this topic out there becomes crucially important.”
More Susceptible to Philosophical Influence
Moreover, Buterin argued that general-purpose languages like C++. Which don’t have much room to be shaped by social philosophy, may be less affected by their creators’ ideologies. However, Buterin contended that Ethereum’s layer 1 is more susceptible to philosophical influence. Also, he pointed to its transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) and its support for light clients as instances.
Furthermore, he said that an individual who does not have the belief in decentralization would not include light clients or excellent methods of account abstraction. Also, Buterin informed a user in a subsequent post that, in his view, the decentralized prediction market, Web3 social protocol Farcaster, and crypto privacy protocol Railgun along with messenger app Signal are good examples of apps with a good social philosophy.
Moreover, Buterin termed the memecoin platform Pump.fun, the collapsed crypto ecosystem Terra, its native token Terra LUNA, and the collapsed crypto exchange FTX as examples of bad social philosophy.
