Woman drives on wrong side of H-1 Freeway, in critical condition

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A woman is in critical condition following an early morning crash on the H-1 Freeway, just west of the Punahou Street overpass.

The crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, and initiated a full shutdown of the H-1 westbound. Lanes have since been reopened just after 9 a.m.

How can you avoid a traffic collision?

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the 25-year-old female was driving on the wrong side of the freeway.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said she collided head-on with a 77-year-old male who was driving an 18-wheeler. HPD said he was driving in the #2 lane.

Following the collision, officials said bystanders helped extract the 25-year-old female from her car.

Paramedics arrived and “administered life-saving treatment” to the woman before bringing her to the hospital for critical head and multisystem trauma injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was also treated and brought to the hospital for serious shoulder injuries.

HPD said the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and an investigation is ongoing.
